The Burning Anticlimax

Just a quick note. Last night I got home from visiting a friend at around midnight, and I completely forgot that the expansion to the World of Warcraft was being released at special midnight openings, even in the “Urban Cowboy” city of Pasadena. I had to go see it for myself. I did manage to get a couple of pictures of the GameStop on Fairmont Parkway, where there was quite a little line for Pasadena and no extra copies that I knew of. Seeing as my highest level character is only level 40, the only advantage to having the expansion for me will be the ability to roll Dranei characters -> which was only enough to wait until today to see what the release day crowd would be like.

To put it briefly, there was no crowd. I walked into Best Buy at about 10:30 am to what seemed to be a ghost town - what normally expect on an average Tuesday morning just after it opens. I walked back to the game section, and they did have a special table laid out with many copies of the expansion, several collector’s editions, Blizzard hats, maps, strategy guides, etc.

I’m not a Collector’s Edition type guy, especially in the midst of job crisis, but a few gift cards got burned in order to get the regular version. I have to say, good job on the part of Blizzard and the retailers for making sure that having enough copies means no chaos. And, although I suppose I was a part of it in my small way, the pre-ordering/midnight pickup movement is a completely pointless movement to be a part of. Given that some of these people probably had prepaid months ago, one has to ask what the use is if the retailers are going to have stacks and stacks during regular business hours.

So, I have the expansion now with 20 levels between my main and any of the new content. What to do? Roll “yet another” Alliance shaman for kicks, and start the grind.
